Abstract

We report a new measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries for dijet production in collisions of polarized protons at $s$ = 200 \mathrm{GeV} $. C or r e l a t i o n s b e tw ee n t h e p r o t o n s p inan d t h e t r an s v er se m o m e n t a o f i t s p a r t o n s, e a c h p er p e n d i c u l a r t o t h e p r o t o nm o m e n t u m d i r ec t i o n, a r e p r o b e d a t hi g h$ Q^2\approx $160$ \mathrm{GeV}^2 $. E v i d e n ce f or n o n z er o S i v er se f f ec t s i s m e a s u r e df or t h e f i r s tt im e in d ij e t s f r o m p r o t o n - p r o t o n co l l i s i o n s, b u t o n l y w h e n t h e j e t s a r esor t e d b y t h e i r n e t c ha r g e, w hi c h e nhan ces t h eo t h er w i sec an ce l in g o pp os i t e - s i g n$ u $- or$ d $- q u a r k co n t r ib u t i o n s t ose p a r a t e d a t a s am pl es . T h er es u l t in g a sy mm e t r i es a r eco m p a r e d t or ece n tt h eor e t i c a l c a l c u l a t i o n s . S e p a r a t e l y, t h e a ssoc ia t e d S i v er so b ser v ab l e$ \kt$, the average parton transverse momentum, is extracted using a simple kinematics approach which further enables a determination of the individual partonic contributions to the observed asymmetries.
